Historien om Inlandsbanan

Freight services

Inlandsbanan runs for about 1100 km through the interior of Northern Sweden. This is the part of Sweden that is richest in raw materials, and the railway line has a key role to play in providing environmentally friendly freight network for the future. This freight network is essential for a dynamic and expanding economy.

High capacity

The track has been upgraded along much of the section used for freight services, from Mora to Arvidsjaur. On the remainder of the line, from Sveg to Brunflo, the current permissible axle load of 20 tonnes will shortly be raised. The line will then have a uniform permissible load of 22.5 tonnes. However, dispensation has already been given for 22.5-tonne axle loads between Sveg and Brunflo.

When the main railway network is temporarily disrupted, traffic can be diverted along Inlandsbanan.

Deregulation

Since the Swedish railway system was deregulated in 1993, the following companies have been granted freight licences on Inlandsbanan: Hector Rail, Green Cargo AB and Inlandståget AB.

Outsourced track maintenance

Inlandsbanan AB has outsourced track and equipment maintenance to various suppliers with the type and length of contract depending on the scope of supply. Based on its totally positive experiences to date, not least financially, Inlandsbanan AB has held seminars on its findings, both in Sweden and abroad.

New traffic management system

A new, highly efficient traffic management system is planned. Inlandsbanan AB is currently taking a close look at Adtranz’s Interflow system and other similar solutions.

30-ton axle loads

HAPS is the name of Inlandsbanan’s project to increase load capacity. This joint project with Luleå University aims to increase the axle load capacity on spiked track, to determine if the load per freight car can be increased without impairing safety and to look at how this new technology can be used. Testing is currently underway on a test stretch to see what investments or measures are needed to meet the future demands of industry.

Less environmental impact

Inlandsbanan stretches 1,100 kilometres through the wilderness of central northern Sweden, an area of outstanding beauty, rich in natural resources. The railway line has an important role to play in reducing the environmental impact of transporting goods over long distances. A diesel locomotive can pull the equivalent load of 25 heavy goods vehicles with significantly lower emissions per tonne of freight.

Inlandsbanan AB is actively addressing the need to reduce the environmental impact of moving goods and people, with the aim of offering an environmentally friendly, safe, socio-economically beneficial and efficient transport system.
