When it was time to replace the old railcars operating on the Swedish railway lines, a modified version of an Italian railcar – or motor coach – made by Fiat was ordered. The first one came to Sweden in 1979 for testing at Östersund. The coaches were manufactured by Fiat in Italy and by Kalmar Verkstad in Sweden. The last of the one hundred railcars ordered entered service in 1981. The ones from Italy had green seats and the ones from Sweden had red seats.
They operated on lines throughout Sweden, notably in northern Sweden and on Inlandsbanan. The Y1 is still used on Inlandsbanan for the summer service between Mora and Gällivare. Over the years, the original interiors of the coaches have been replaced. Two of the railcars still have the original Fiat engines, whilst the others have been given more powerful Volvo engines.
