Historien om Inlandsbanan

The company

Inlandsbanan AB – making tracks for the future

Inlandsbanan AB/IBAB was founded in 1993 and is owned by the fifteen local authorities through which the line passes. Inlandsbanan AB is responsible for the administration and development of the line, while independent train operating companies run freight and tourist services.

More than just a means of transportation

Inlandsbanan is the real backbone of central northern Sweden. The importance of linking the remote, sparsely populated, natural resource-rich north with the industrial south of Sweden was appreciated as early as the late nineteenth century. In fact the line was originally built – between 1907 and 1937 – mainly to transport precious raw materials from north to south.

Today Inlandsbanan is crucial for both tourism and industry. Good freight transport services are vital for the dynamic and expanding commercial sector. But Inlandsbanan is also a significant link in a wider, international perspective. Virtually every shipment that moves along the line is destined for other parts of Sweden or further afield.

Inlandsbanan AB is actively involved in developing the local region in a number of ways. For instance, over the past few years, the company has increased the capacity of the line and helped improve local infrastructure and IT communications. These initiatives are all part of an extensive programme to help promote both local industry and communities along Inlandsbanan.

Unique tourist trains

Summer is a time of long, enchanting days in northern Sweden. Inlandsbanan stretches from delightful Dalarna, which is steeped in tradition, and is home to the famous brightly-painted red wooden horses, to beyond the Arctic Circle and into the land of the midnight sun. There are three unforgettable journeys for tourists to choose from: the steam train, the wilderness train and the Inlandsbanan bus. It is also now possible to travel the entire length of Inlandsbanan in one journey.

Future passenger traffic

The possibility of opening the entire Inlandsbanan line for passenger services is currently under discussion by the national body responsible for inter-regional public transport and regional development.

Re-opening disused stretches

There is a great deal of support from both local authorities and industry to reopen the currently disused line south of Mora for freight and passenger services.

Organisational structure

IBAB is led and run by a managing director and a four-person executive team. Responsibility for traffic control and safety is divided into three sections: Sveg, Hoting and Storuman. For operation and maintenance purposes the line is split into two regions, one in the north and one in the south, which meet at Meselefors. IBAB is thus responsible for traffic control and maintenance of the railway, as well as licensing the train operating companies.

IBAB’s vision

IBAB shall lay the foundations for the preservation and development of Inlandsbanan, by running the railway and by supporting the joint owners’ housing and industrial development programmes.

IBAB’s mission

To improve the infrastructure of Northern Sweden, particularly of the interior, thus enabling conventional industrial development and tourism. This involves providing national, as well as international, transport links.

To provide an environmentally friendly, safe and profitable transport network for the local community and for businesses, with a particular emphasis on freight transport.

To provide a multicultural and eco-friendly experience for tourists.

To maintain the railway in suitable condition for operation in the 21st century. To preserve the settings and culture of the 20th century. To proactively assist the joint owners and to be available to them when they are dealing with issues concerning Inlandsbanan.

Equal opportunities

Inlandsbanan AB operates a policy of equal opportunities for all. This covers the working environment, parental rights, working hours, sexual harassment, recruitment, training, health and safety, and pay.
